The visa was officially approved on March 28, 2022, yet initially lacked defined application requirements. However, with the passing of law decree 79/2024 on February 29, 2024, and its publication on April 4, 2024, the Italian government has now set out the requirements for applying.
They are also currently working with consular authorities (Italian consulates and embassies) to refine the application process.

As the Italian digital nomad visa is relatively new, not all its requirements are well-established. However, the basic prerequisites are outlined in the law decree 79/2024 include:
- Valid passport
- Visa application form: obtained at from the Italian consulate or embassy in your home country
- 2 passport-sized photographs: colored photographs, measuring 35 by 45mm
- Work contract or agreement from a company registered outside of Italy: outlining employment terms, including job nature, duration, and compensation.
- Work experience: demonstrate at least 6 months of experience as a digital nomad or remote worker.
- Financial means: show proof of sufficient financial means, with a minimum of 28,000 euros in annual income
- Clean criminal record certificate
- Accommodation proof: present proof of accommodation for the duration of your stay, such as a rental agreement or hotel/Airbnb booking.
- Health insurance: obtain health insurance that covers your stay in Italy and the rest of the Schengen area
Italy Digital Nomad Visa Step-By-Step Guide

Arrive promptly at the designated consulate or embassy with all required documentation in hand. Follow the instructions provided by consulate staff, and be prepared to provide biometric data, such as fingerprints, during your appointment.
Step 4: Wait for Approval
Following application submission, await visa approval. There is no clear timeline for applying for the digital nomad visa for Italy. However, since this it is expected to take around 30 to 90 days. Once approved, get ready to jet-set off to Italy.
Step 5: Apply For Temporary Residency
Remember, a visa grants entry, but a residence permit is essential for an extended stay. Within eight working days of arriving in Italy, apply for a residence permit, known as the permesso di soggiorno. Initially valid for up to one year, it can be renewed annually, subject to unchanged conditions. Family members can also apply for residency alongside you.
Step 6: Comply With Italy´s Tax Regulations
When moving to Italy, it’s imperative to be tax compliant. This entails adhering to Italian tax laws and regulations throughout your stay. However, the specific taxation implications are currently unclear and expected to be clarified by the Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate) as visa applications are processed.
